Every child in Ms. Gandy’s (Julia Garner) primary school class disappears one night, except Alex (Cary Christopher). The town descends into panic, and turns on her, starting with Archer (Josh Brolin) a grieving father.
Think
The suspence of what happened to the children is a modern Pied Piper tale told through multiple perspectives of those affected, like Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon. As well as Justine Gandy, Alex, and Archer, there’s a local cop and Justine’s ex boyfriend, Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), James (Austin Abrams) the junkie he has run ins with who saw something suspicious, and Gladys (Amy Madigan) Alex’s elderly aunt, who comes instead of his mum and dad with Principal Marcus (Benedict Wong) for a parent teacher meeting.
Feel
The horror is the moral panic of the town turning on the teacher, the remaining boy’s powerlessness, and the mystery and creepiness of the children running off into the night.
